 whiplash:

conflict and ideologies

whiplash was written and directed by Chazelle and tells the story of a young student who dreams of being the best jazz drummer whilst directed by a horribly strict teacher that pushes him to his limits whiplash asks ideological questions about a range of issues such as education, relationships, and masculinity and the careers in the 21st century.

conflict:

Conflict within whiplash is first presented through his uncomfortable break-up with Nicole suggesting even her existence would conflict with his quest to be drummer and that they would only learn to resent each other. This moment peers into Andrews abnormal feelings with personal relationships where he renders them unimportant compared to his future career. This lack of 'normal' social relationships mean he is susceptible to manipulation by his teacher later on. Throughout whiplash, Fletcher's- the strict teacher- angry and aggressive personality is juxtaposed with Andrew's soft and hesitant one. This is evident in the dialogue with fletcher's tendency to swear and shout and Andrews behaviour as he nervously plucks up the courage to ask Nicole out. In addition, Fletcher costume is black and tight fitting hinting to his harsh and sharp attitude which again contradicts Andrews baggie clothing.

ideologies:

Whiplash criticizes privatised education by showing a negative effect on Andrews personality after his success and Shaffer school; he breaks up with Nicole, confront other drummers and wrestles his teacher to the floor which demonstrates the film passing judgment over the value of expensive education suggesting that it could have lasting psychological effects on the students. Whiplash also explores the contemporary ideology of favouring a career at the expense of relationships. fletcher, similarly to Andrew, is never seen with any friends shown where he has a post-performance drink with Andrew and no one else. suggest that he has sacrificed personal relationships in order to become truly great and expects the same sacrifice from his students. Finally, the definition of whiplash being injury cause by a head jerk, suggest that whiplash is not a piece of music performed at Shaffer but instead something which is forcibly felt by Andrew in his car crash and referring to the physical nature of fletcher's aspect to education. through the absence of men, Chazelle openly criticizes the aggressive and violent tendencies of masculinity. ultimately the film raises doubts if Andrew and the other students will ever recover from the emotional and physical trauma of whiplash.

what have I learnt?

from this article i have learnt to look deeper into the choices of the director as each aspect and decision of the film was done for a reason and used to communicate various opinions or meanings for the audience. I can apply this to my studies when looking at various pieces of media to look at it with this in mind, looking at each aspect and why it was made to break down the components, if its effective or not and if so then why.

Dixon- Livingstone and Lunt:

Tell us that a consumer based regulator system should seek to guarantee audience choice and promote diversity

With a citizen orientated approach realising the effect that media consumption has of the structure of society

Concept 1-consumer oriented approach

Regulation champions consumer choice-

designed to ensure diversity of broadcasters that operate within the media- broad ideas and opinions

Relies on consumer led policing and program’s content-

they argue that content monitoring plays a secondary role with this model as audience have to rely on their own judgments of the media

The state play a minor role in determining media regulation-

minimises government intervention in pushing media provides to make content that has benefits- e.g. factual and educational.

The citizens-based approach-

Constructs a media model based on civic republicanism- pushes media producers to produce culturally and social and diverse products to enrich society

Citizen-based regulation content  issues- want to produce good quality product to ensure programmes are maintained

Encourages a media landscape that can critique governmental power- an essential function of the media to hold government accountable and spread politics issues

Communications act 2003-designed to modernise television. Promoted independent tv production by requiring the BBC to commission more content from smaller production companies. Ofcom diluted the public service requirements leading to some critics saying tv now lacks the civic minded republicanism that had been previously reinforced.

Self regulation-

Producers are left to promote their own ethics and opinions so produce their own editorial codes to guide creative personnel.

Concept 2

Regulation in the globalised media age-

They argue RHAT the global contemporary media production has weakened the United Kingdoms ability to produce meaningful control media content.

The recent explanation of online service- expand outside of the uk- lack of control

Tech giants do not author they own content- Netflix hire author/ buy out particular shows and file to put on their platform - lack of regulation.

The internet is decentralised- no place where the internet is controlled so each countries rules for regulation may not be followed

Online anonymity- many people remain anonymous online so any regulation breaking may be hard to in force

People who challenge them -Henry Jenkins: who emphasis the benefits of global media and the opportunities its brings

David Gauntlett: effects of globalisation by I introducing individual we had not been exposed to- culture enrichment .

By reading this it has enhanced my understanding of the theory but demonstrating the effects of media globalisation and the effect it has on the ability to regulate as well as using key terminology to deepen my understanding of the effect

shelter short film sept 2025

shows a boy singing, telling us about his house as it goes to show poor, dirty, damp conditions as the parents argue. it then goes on to say how he wonders if he's going to be there long which reinforces the message that it is a 'house' not his home. this shows how shelter aims to create a stable environment for families and prevent the fear of not knowing where they are going to love and the conditions they are living in. this shows there altruistic values as they are advertising for the protection of everyone showing there socialist behavior
